Trailering The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Here’s the first teaser for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Dec. 13), so feast your eyes on the initial glimpses of the dragon (voiced by the very busy Benedict Cumberbatch) and Evangeline Lilly’s elf, Tauriel.

The trailer should go over very well this weekend when it plays in front of Man of Steel because the middle part of the trilogy grows darker and more dangerous: “the quest to reclaim a homeland and slay a dragon.”

While it hints at the inevitable turning of Dwarf leader Thorn (Richard Armitage) in his quest for power, there are so many more threads to explore in a more expansive world.  It’s not surprising that Smaug looks far more dramatically compelling and visually rich than The Unexpected Journey.

And the sneak peek of the slithering dragon proves a sly animation wonder from Weta Digital, which has a greater range of environments and characters.
