Trailering Full Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

The full trailer for Peter Jackson’s second Hobbit movie (Dec. 13) is online, highlighted by Benedict Cumberbatch’s growling dragon and a cascade of fire.

The middle movie is often the best and this one deepens the saga dramatically and visually (Weta’s VFX looks much more varied and complex, anchored, of course, by the performance captured dragon, which makes it a prime Oscar contender).

There’s plenty of action (including archery and swordplay), and we have the reappearance of Orlando Bloom’s Legolas from Lord of the Rings, along with the introduction of Evangeline Lilly’s Tauriel. Thorin (Richard Armitage) grows more obsessed with power and Bilbo (Martin Freeman) finds his courage in fighting a giant spider and confronting the dragon with the help of his golden ring.
