Life of Pi clawed its way closer to VFX Oscar gold Tuesday night, powered by Rhythm & Hues and MPC, grabbing four prizes at the 11th annual VES Awards at the Beverly Hilton, including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature; Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture (R&H’s CG Bengal tiger, Richard Parker); Outstanding FX and Simulation Animation in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture (MPC’s Storm of God); and Outstanding Compositing in a Feature Motion Picture (Storm of God). Rhythm & Hues Averts Financial Crisis

Rhythm & Hues, the VFX Oscar frontrunner for Life of Pi, has averted a financial crisis with the help of a $20 million cash infusion from Fox, Universal, and Warner Bros. This will help sustain the company through April, according to The Wrap and Variety. Meanwhile, India’s Prime Focus will offer further financial assistance and might wind up purchasing R&H. Life of Pi not only grabbed 11 nominations (second only to Lincoln’s 12), including best picture, but Ang Lee’s spiritual epic also dominated the tech categories with eight nods for cinematography, production design, editing, VFX, sound editing and mixing, original score, and original song — “Pi’s Lullaby.” Read more

The big Oscar nomination surprises in terms of animation and VFX were that Sony/Aardman’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits beat out DreamWorks’ Rise of the Guardians, (which means that all three stop-motion contenders were honored), and that Snow White and the Huntsman upended The Dark Knight Rises. The Hobbit Grabs 7 VES Nominations

The Visual Effects Society announced the nominees for the 11th annual VES Awards, with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey leading the way with seven, followed closely by The Avengers and Life of Pi with six. Meanwhile, ParaNorman grabbed five nominations in the animation category. The biggest surprise was that the under-performing Battleship was a nominee for ILM in the Outstanding Visual Effects-Driven category for movies. Read more

VFX Bakeoff 2013: The Last Stand

Thursday night at the Academy we were treated to a VFX snapshot of 2012 during the annual Oscar bakeoff. Ten semi-finalists competed before the committee, five of which were nominated and will be announced next Thursday. From Richard Parker to Gollum 2.0 to the Hulk to the last of Chris Nolan’s Dark Knight to the emotional destruction of the Aston Martin DB5, it was about grounding the fantastical in its own reality. Marc Petit Leaves Autodesk
