Trailering The Master

The latest trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s eagerly anticipated The Master (Oct. 12) sets up the manipulation between Philip Seymour Hoffman’s L. Ron Hubbard riff (“hopelessly inquisitive”) and Joaquin Phoenix’s addicted servant ensnared in his trap. It reminds me of Pinter. The previous trailer introduces Phoenix being unable to come to grips with his dark side. He’s being interrogated about a violence episode he can’t remember. I like his Brando-like grin. The Weinstein Co. has another Oscar contender.
