Trailering The Iron Giant: Signature Edition

Watch the new trailer for the signature edition of Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant, celebrating its 16th anniversary, premiering in the TIFF’s kid section and coming to select theaters Sept. 30 with two deleted scenes (most likely including “Robot Dreams”).

The Iron Giant¬†was Bird’s first — and in many ways — still his best animated feature, finding inspiration in “the poetic simplicity” of Ted Hughes’ book but setting it in America at the height of the Cold War, wrapped around the notion, “What if a gun had a soul and didn’t want to be a gun?”

The talented voice cast includes Eli Marienthal, Christopher McDonald, Jennifer Aniston, Harry Connick, Jr. and Vin Diesel.

As he told me six years ago, “I don’t think it’s really like any other animated feature. If you were to ask me which part of the film I enjoyed directing the most, it would be the last 20 minutes, because the mood swings wildly between sad and happy, explosively exhilarating and quietly moving, and seems to do so very efficiently. A lot of films have good set ups, but many fail to close the deal at their conclusion. I’m very proud of the fact that we closed the deal.”

The Blu-ray release should be imminent.
