Trailering The Great Gatsby

When I was a teenager, I distinctly remember seeing the trailer for Jack Clayton’s The Great Gatsby in ’74. It was glitzy and elegant and punctuated by Irving Berlin’s introspective “What’ll I Do.” What a contrast to have Baz Luhrmann open his trailer with Kanye West/Jay-Z doing “No Church in the Wild.”

It’s one thing to jazz up F. Scott Fitzgerald’s poetic masterpiece into a hyper real experience, particularly in 3-D, but will the whole thing play like the feverishly stylized Moulin Rouge? We’ll have to wait and see. But I do like the casting of Gatsby, Daisy, and Nick with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire. Get immersed Christmas Day when Baz does Gatsby.
