The first glimpse of Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful (March 8, 2013) was revealed at Comic-Con. True to form, the trailer begins in black and white with James Franco’s carnival barker Oscar Diggs forced to flee dusty Kansas during the same familiar twister that hurled Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. He lands in the colorful Oz, where he thinks he’ll pull off the ultimate con. That is, until he confronts three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who find his claims of wizardry dubious. The iconic tropes are all present, especially concerning the Wicked Witch of the West, but there’s obviously something more at work in this origin story from the Wizard’s point of view.
