Trailering Nebraska

The first trailer for Alexander Payne’s black-and-white Nebraska (Nov. 15) reveals why Bruce Dern is an Oscar contender for best actor.

Nebraska’s a bizarre father/son road trip told with Payne’s cockeyed sensibility. And Dern shines as a cantankerous coot who gets a sweepstakes letter in the mail and wrangles his disbelieving son (Will Forte) into joining him to claim his million bucks. Think Preston Sturges’ Christmas in July only more twisted.

Dern’s a survivor — a talented character actor who always wanted to be a leading man (he thought he should’ve had the Jon Voight role in Coming Home). So it’s no surprise that he’s aiming for best actor instead of the safer best supporting actor category.
