We get the full-length trailer to Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master (Oct. 12), which not only looks like a top 10 must-see but also plays like a companion piece to There Will Be Blood.
The post-World War II allegory about the imploding ’50s explores the rise of an L. Ron Hubbard-type of cult leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and his mentor/protege relationship with a volatile alcoholic drifter (Joaquin Phoenix), who slowly turns against The Cause. Filmed beautifully in 65mm by Mihai Malaimare Jr., the trailer perhaps gives too much away, yet there’s more than meets the eye to Hoffman’s enigmatic opportunist. That’s what makes The Master so potentially compelling. The futility of good intentions or something more sinister?
