Danny Boyle’s Happy & Glorious short was the highlight of Friday’s London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, with Daniel Craig as James Bond escorting Queen Elizabeth in high style. Very iconic and surreal, 007 struts through the palace looking serious but cracking a smile. A little stiff, perhaps, (he’s more comfortable with her dogs), but then this is unusual company for Bond and he’s still finding his way. He has much more fun parachuting out of the helicopter with the Queen to the original “Bond Theme.” Boyle was assisted by Union VFX from storyboards to previs to post.

That was fun, but I was puzzled by the ending, which seemed to just fizzle out. I’m not sure how much of it was NBC’s edited down version that we got in the US, but shouldn’t there have been a button at the end of this short? Like James Bond standing to the side or delivering her to the box, before they cut to the live footage? Felt unsatisfying.
