First Trailering of Into the Woods

Not surprisingly, Meryl Streep steals the spotlight in the first teaser for Disney’s  Into the Woods (opening Christmas Day), commanding, “Go to the wood!”  But there’s only a hint that it’s a musical and Stephen Sondheim’s association is hidden until the end.

But we’re finally getting Into the Woods, and despite the overly familiar look of the VFX (MPC also did Maleficent) and some compromises along the way in softening the tone, Sondheim’s subversive fairy tale masterpiece about loss and greed,  responsibility and redemption is ripe for a powerful cinematic spectacle. And I have faith in director Rob Marshall, screenwriter/librettist James Lapine, and this fabulous ensemble cast of  Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Chris Pine, and Johnny Depp as the Wolf.
