In the second “Conversations with Sound Artists” podcast from the Dolby Institute and the Soundworks Collection, Rob Krekel & Phillip Kovats of Naughty Dog Studios discuss the challenges of the upcoming Uncharted 4 (listen to a clip below).
The line between cinematics and game play has disappeared in modern games. And with Uncharted 4, Naughty Dog has undertaken a full physics-driven, player-controlled vehicle. Therefore, getting the authentic sound of the jeep was crucial. They recorded out in the desert but then had to figure out player response — controlling the gas and the hand-brake — and came up with an audio system behind the physics. It’s a much more detailed, off-road experience than a racing game.
In addition, they work collaboratively with the programmer, the designer and the artists in achieving parity between video and audio.
