Clipping Popeye Animation Test

Watch a nifty animation test for Genndy Tartakovsky’s upcoming Popeye with Sony Pictures Animation. It really captures the essence of the beloved Max Fleischer cartoon by applying what Tartakovsky learned about breaking the CG rules to get more of a hand-drawn aesthetic to his Hotel Transylvania.

Popeye is very personal to Tartakovsky (he studied with Gordon Sheehan of the Fleischer Studios). But it’s taken longer to bring his vision to the screen. He was hoping to get the greenlight right after Hotel T, but instead has been working on Hotel Transylvania 2 (Sept. 25, 2015). He hopes this test helps create the heat that gets the movie put into production. Here’s hoping it happens very soon.
