Clipping Into the Woods with a Singing Streep

The new featurette for Into the Woods (Dec. 25) finally embraces its musical strengths and explains more about the fairy tale mash-up. We get to hear Meryl Streep’s Witch sing the sorrowful  ”Stay with Me.”

Disney might be playing off of Once Upon a Time and Maleficent, but Stephen Sondheim was much more subversive in turning “Happily Ever After” on its head with this greedy group of fairy tale icons. “I Wish” has very wicked unintended consequences. I always thought by that Into the Woods was too dark for Hollywood, but if you’re going to make it, then do it right. Fingers crossed that Rob Marshall has pulled it off without too many compromises.
