The Boxtrolls represents Laika’s most elaborate, action-packed stop-motion movie yet. It’s a feast for the eyes — more Hammer than gothic — and the two biggest challenges were the frantic waltz sequence and the Mecha-Drill mayhem. But overall, as director Graham Annable admits, “The growth and maturity of Laika, combined with the Victorian steampunk look, made for such a rich, ornate, detailed setting. It just pushed everybody’s skills to the max.” Read more

Shotgun Celebrates Inaugural Pipeline Awards at SIGGRAPH

At the Shotgun User Group held during SIGGRAPH 2014 in Vancouver, Shotgun Software held the first ever Pipeline Awards to honor excellence in pipeline tool development, integration, engineering, and usage. Members of the Shotgun community from around the world submitted inventive tools for consideration, and four were recognized with Pipeline Shotty Awards, distinguishing them as the best pipeline tools of 2014. Shotgun also recognized four individuals as “Pipeline Heroes,” leaders who have had a significant impact on the pipeline community through their technical contributions and commitment to sharing ideas and best practices. Immersed in the Laika Boxtrolls Set Visit

With The Boxtrolls (Sept. 26), Laika tackles its first period piece — Victorian Steampunk — as well as its first creature-oriented tale about an orphan boy, Eggs, raised underground by cave-dwelling trash collectors. The result is a more stylized, theatrical look along with more ambitious storytelling. And judging by my set visit last year in Portland and footage screened last month, The Boxtrolls is sure to be one of the year’s best animated features and a prime Oscar contender. Read more
